Litter

Dear All.

I have lived in Ashton for approximately 7 years now, originally by sheer chance and circumstance. However I have grown to like the area very much and have no plans to move. Infact, we sold our house 2 years ago, and bought another around the corner!

I moved from Leigh and have lived for many years in Tyldesley. I have a very close friend who lives in Ulverston and family (in laws) in Scotland and Brighton. Of all the places I have visited and all the places my family and friends visit, why is it that Ashton is the one place that seems to have more litter and rubbish of late than of any other place?

The litter problem seems to be mainly on Gerard Street and Bolton Road up as far as Golborne Road. It has annoyed me for some time. I made a couple of calls to the council but nothing more.

I returned from Brighton today feeling depressed after having a lovely weekend. As we drove along Warrington Road, I mentioned to the wife and daughter that Ashton wasn’t all that bad and smiled. Hhaaa! Home at last!

Then I drove onto Gerard Street. WHY?

Monday tea time. Chip papers, cans, crisp packets, newspapers, all over the pavement and in the road.

I had been to BRIXTON of all places on the way back on some business, also visiting Peng and Croydon. All three areas having deprived neighbourhoods - but no litter.

It is up to the Police to enforce littering laws but they are far outstretched to start off with.

What is the councils view? I see the gentleman on a daily basis sweeping the streets - he does a good job, but is he to do it alone?

What can we do to tidy Ashtons act up? Is anything planned? Any ideas?

AM I ALONE OR DO YOU AGREE?

John.

Re: Litter

John i agree with you 100%.As far as the police are concerned would someone tell me just what their role in Ashton is. Until we get proper policeing in Ashton and not if nothing is happening in Wigan at the moment policeing. Not only is their a litter problem but the young thugs have taken over and the police turn a blind eye. What were the CCTV cameras put in Ashton for I DONT THINK THEY HAVE WORKED SINCE INSTALLED OR AM I WRONG AND THEY PICK UP ALL THE LITTER LOUTS BUT THE POLICE CHOOSE TO IGNORE THEM, its a lot easyer getting money out of drivers.

Re: Re: Litter

I couldn't agree with you more concerning police turning a blind-eye to thuggery and vandalism within A-in-M. Where were the CCTV cams pointing when the bus shelter was kicked to death (twice)? Why is 1 thug allowed to ruin the life of motorist who park outside their own homes by smashing car windscreens, breaking off wing mirrors and snapping off arials etc. If the Police can spare a few days away from the their regular 'sick and absentee parades' -- perhaps A-in-M might return to normal. In conclusion I might add that the Head-Teachers are also failing the community in allowing school children to wander around Ashton (in Brown and Green uniforms) when the children should be in school and under the gaze of their teachers. If ever theire were a fire in the schools -- many children would be found absent-- what then?

Re: Litter

John like you said, does that road sweeper need to be alone.. well why not pick up a brush and do some voluntary work for the council and help him sweep up.
Tell me where you live and I will supply a pair of gloves and a flat cap…
Show us how much you care about ashton.
Tony

Re: Re: Litter

Tony

Are you trying to recruit volunteers? If we see anyone with a flat cap and glove picking up litter around Ashton - that will be you then??

We already clear up the mess and litter left in front of our own home daily. I don't see why we should be clearing it up in front of yours or anyone elses. We pay enough council tax and this service should be provided to all by the council.

Ashton is an absolute disgrace for litter!!!

Disgusted

Re: Re: Re: Litter

I have been to many other places and never seen such a litter problem, why is it our town that is so bad, and why is the local council doing nothing about it.
Infact do they do anything for anyone....its about time we made a change, grab yout pitch forks and axes, i think the people of ashton should revolt.

Re: Re: Re: Litter

If you are so concerned about litter why not clean the entire town, or have you suddenly gone of the idea, no point in wining about it on this message board go and do something about it, if I felt the same way about something I would try my hardest to make a difference.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Litter

Tony and 'The Spotter'.

Get a grip.

As others have stated on this thread, it is the £1000 a year that I and most others spend on council tax that should be put to good use and clear up the mess.

I keep my own front tidy and take a pride in what I own. I was tempted to mention something in response to your comments about the brush - but I'm sure you’re on slightly differing wavelengths and I'm not wasting my time responding to ill thought out (if at all) and childish remarks.

It would appear that I made a blunder on even mentioning it here as a very small minority of members won’t allow a civilized forum or the prospect TOO try and do something about it - appropriately.

John.

I saw two Environmental Enforcement Officers for the first time in town today walking up Gerrard Street, you just wait and see they will pick on someone that drops something out of their pocket by accident or someone that has just drops a sig stump,
