Aldi and the new road.

Does anyone know what is happening on the new Aldi front?

Also, what about the proposal to build a relief road or pedestrianise the town centre?

John.

Re: Aldi and the new road.

CANCEL!!

Just read the items on the site. Thanks!

However, what has actually happened re the road?

John.

Re: Re: Aldi and the new road.

The proposal for a new road to act as a relief road in the town centre was made by a developer, who intended to finance the road by a new supermarket to the west of Bryn Street. However, the Council had given the developer a deadline of May 2004 to submit a formal planning application, and had also requested that they consult with local people regarding their proposals. The Wigan Observer this week reported that as the developer had done neither the Council had withdrawn their approval for the proposed plan.

It looks like Ashton is stuck with traffic problems for the immediate future, as the proposed relief road would have removed the present bottleneck of the A49/A58 junction. I'm not sure how another road plan will be financed unless another developer submits plans for the site, which so far is scheduled in the Unitary Development Plan for retail development.

The road to Aldi i think the questioner refars to is the conjestion in Hilton Street, and Ladysmith Ave.
Going back to the ring road i think looking at various Highways Agency sites the proposed extension of the M6 to 8 lanes and the on off facility included in these proposals for junction 25 are what wigan council are suggesting people should take as their by-pass

I don't think so - John mentioned the pedestrianisation of the town centre, by which I presume he means Gerard Street. That was envisaged as part of the proposals for the new road system running from Liverpool Road to the library.

Where have you seen Highways Agency proposals to build a northern access/egress link at Junction 25? I know Wigan MBC would like this link, but I hadn't seen any HA proposals to build it.

The Council have incorporated a road in the new Unitary Development Plan from the island on the A49 at Landgate running down Lockett Road to reach the A58 at Stubshaw Cross, but AFAIK that is only an intention rather than a firm plan.

I'm hoping that the building of the A5225 from the M6 at Orrell to Westhoughton will take some of the east/west traffic out of Ashton. At present if you want to travel from Hindley to Marus Bridge you either have to go through Wigan or through Ashton.

One thing is certain - Ashton town centre needs some relief from through traffic. The staggered junction of the A49 and A58 is a real hold-up.
