Hi
My grandfather had his Wizard Boat motor store in our garage and I would like to know if there is a way to tell what year it is since they were made in 1947 and 1948. Was it just a certain spot where serial numbers were the year? Also any idea of value I could get photos but it appears in nicer shape and I believe he used it before he switched boats.
Near the top of this page, click on return to website. Under the heading of tech info there is a model/year/serial# chart. Since there are no serial numbers listed for the wd4s motor you can look at the next year's starting serial # and figure they made about 18,000 plus motors a year and figure roughly how close to 1949 your motor may have been made. But then this is all conjecture as they may have not used consecutive serial numbers until 1949.
Johns Old Mercury (a pay to use site) White Paper has a comprehensive but
somewhat complex listing of Kiekhaefer data if year and production is an
important consideration.

Ok thanks for your help it looks like it is a 1946 186xxx serial number. From what I understood it was just 47 48 production so that helps a lot. Any idea of a value I could get photos later this week if anyone has an idea. I believe it was the motor my grandfather used at times up to about 20 years ago before he got another boat and motor which he sold in 2008.
There is no "good" answer for this, price is dependent on where you are, motor conditon, what someone would pay for it, etc. In my neck of the woods (WI) 100 bucks or less is pretty normal, occasionsally there is a real nice one that goes for a little more. Pictures and where it is located may help locating a buyer.
