Re: wf4 outboard motors info

What sites can go tho with my serial numbers to get more info on this motor?

Re: wf4 outboard motors info

The Old Outboard Book shows they are indeed 1949-1950 model years. They were made by Mercury and had parts in common with Mercury KD4. You can find info on that model on www.oldmercs.com. They are pretty easy to work on and run great. Ask your questions here or on www.aomci.org

Re: wf4 outboard motors info

Thanks for the info.It has been sitting in storage about 40 years any suggestions on what to do first to free it up. It has been sitting upside down inside.

Re: wf4 outboard motors info

Stored upside down you say...does not sound good. If you mean by freeing it
that it does not turn over...stuck or STUCK? I would proceed by steps:
1) try to move flywheel both back and forth and up and down...you will need
to remove tank/rewind assembly and cowl...if you have cowl good...often
removed and lost. If flywheel will move slightly back and forth and has
a little end play reason for stuck lies elsewhere.

2) Remove spark plugs and insert a dowel or rod to contact piston...rock
the flywheel back and forth...if one piston moves slightly and the
other does not you have identified a stuck piston...sometimes both
pistons are stuck.

3) Sometimes the lower unit is the stuck item...remove the two screws that
secure water pump housing to gear case and remove...it is a good idea
to squirt lube in cylinders and thru carburetor opening before trying
to turn flywheel.

Do not attempt to force anything by attaching long wrench or use of large
hammer...will do harm. The above steps will diagnose where motor is stuck
not cure a stuck motor.

Do these things and let us know what you find. Old outboards may have
their troubles but most are curable using average skills and basic tools
with a few purpose made devices.
