Re: No clue what year but no fire to plugs

Wizard 6509 is 1965 9hp made by West Bend which was in process of being
acquired by Chrysler at the time.
per per vintage ABOS generic service manual.
West Bend had been supplying Sears with Elgin brand outboards while Scott Atwater (being acquired by McCulloch at the time)had been supplying Western
Auto with Wizard brand outboards. It is hard to tell the players without
a program when it comes to who made what when...suppliers switched
customers as each came under new ownership. The "shakeout"
in the 1950's resulted from the post ww2 demand for consumer goods being
satisfied...not just outboard motors...the peak of car sales in 1955 was
followed by a recession...hard times here in Michigan.

Re: No clue what year but no fire to plugs

Now where to get parts to get this thing running?

Re: No clue what year but no fire to plugs

Sparks start at Magneto which is found under flywheel...so first step is to
remove flywheel (sometimes routine sometimes not) When flywheel has been
removed, clean (polish) and gap ignition points...if that produces a bright
blue spark at spark plug you may be good to go. If still no spark you may
want to check all connections for looseness or corrosion.
Sometimes all that is needed is a tuneup, however if an inspection reveals
a need for parts such as coils note the brand and model of magneto so
the correct parts can be sought. Many outboard makers sourced components
such as magnetos and carburetors from vendors...sometimes several different
vendors supplied parts at different times for same motor.
When and if you find you need specific parts there are several ways to go
to find them. For the present see what lurks under flywheel
