i was just given a wizard 12 (engine cover is white top and aqua) the only numberi can find on it is 179-1623 which is on the inside of the bottom of the engine case, just below the spark plugs. if someone could help me id the year of this motor i'd greatly appreciate it. thanks,

You've got a Wizard made by McCulloch, the company that purchased Scott-Atwater outboard company in the 50's. The model number will start with MLM, and if the same as the one in the photo you sent (MLM6912A), you'll have a 1960 model. If not, you have a 1961...they only made the 12HP those two years. A good resource for these motors is the "Scott Guy" web page. Parts are not as easy to come by as Mercury-made Wizards, but they are out there.
