Re: So Sorry, another No See-Ums question

Richard,
See if the homeowner may have 20x20 screening (no-see-um) screening installed. I know several homes do have it. It really does help but even so, you should try and keep the doors and windows closed at dawn and dusk and use the fans. Also a table top fan placed on the floor blowing at your legs seems to help.

They can be a nuisance or you could get lucky and not have any issues since you are on the windward side of the island. Just be sure to bring some but spray, anti-itch cream such a cortisone, start taking some vitamin B now, and pack a bit of benadryl.

Re: Re: So Sorry, another No See-Ums question

Have dinner at that time doors closed ... Thoses screens dont let the air in.. we had them and the bugs woke us up at 6.00.. Lets hope you have breezes...Thats what is a problem at the beach...

Re: So Sorry, another No See-Ums question

Best product I've found is Coppertone's "Bug'n'Sun" available at WalMart in US. Apply liberally to kneees on down and overspray with a coating of Off. Never have a problem, even at dusk. Works for us.

Re: Re: So Sorry, another No See-Ums question

If it's so good why do you have to add Off on top of it? Just wondering.

Bug Sun is terrific, we also use it at the beach for the flies.

For some strange reason, Viagra does wonders for me, as far as keeping the no see-ums away.

But that does not apply to the ladies.....

Hi Richard. It's me from Montreal again. Start taking Vit. B Complex now and keep taking it the whole time you are there. If you do get bitten it cuts the time the bites itch from days to about 20 minutes. The blonder you are, the more they will like you. Keep the Off available and spray liberally at dawn and dusk especially if the wind is down. When I say liberally, on a really windless day, my husband and I can go thru a can of Off in a day. His dermatogolist says the DEET won't hurt us for length of time we are using it and she is a really involved with pesticide/environment issues. If you are worried about the DEET etc. baby oil works well as does Skin-so-Soft. Do not hang around on the beach after a swim, especially early a.m. and late afternoon unless you respray as soon as you come out of the water. As others mentioned, the no-seeums particularly like the calves and ankles. This all sounds ominous, but they are no worse than blackfly weekend in the Laurentians and have never spoiled our stay. Have a super trip.

We stayed late dusk at Lighthouse point the bugs came out we had to start running it was so bad...but we had nothing on did we learn..

Re: So Sorry, another No See-Ums question

Myself and my husband always use Avon skin-so-soft oil, not sure if you can get this in the USA, but we have no problems when using it, may only get 1 bite the whole time!

Re: So Sorry, another No See-Ums question

Hi Richard,
I have a pretty successful routine that works for me. I hate bugs, bug bites and don't like to use DEET or other chemicals.
I stay off the beach and wear long pants and long sleeves once the sun sets. Exception -- if its really breezy.
I close all windows once the sun sets -- the no-see-ums get through screens.
I take a hot shower immediately before going to bed, and wash sheets in hot water every day ( I thin they cling to your legs otherwise and camp out in your bed otherwise - yuk!)
I have baby oil or other thick oil sunscreen on during the day at the beach.
Hope this helps!
It is not such a big deal -- just annoying unless you take precautions
