Re: kinbreak to loch lochy

Frederic,

A new forestry road not shown on my map runs east on the south side of Glen Garry from a newish bridge map ref NN 1290 9998 to the track leading to the dam in Doire Garbh. This joins the existing tracks to the east.

I went this way in 2012 on wet sunday when high level routes were not an option.

Re: kinbreak to loch lochy

Frederic,

I can vouch for the new forestry road. It is starting to be shown on some maps - streetmap.co.uk has it at 1:25K (except it doesn't show the bridge where the track starts) although it isn't marked on the 1:50K.

I had heard about it and was on it this year without having seen a map, so I got a bit worried when it seemed to be going due south at NN159991.

Colin.

Re: kinbreak to loch lochy

Hi Frederic
None of the cycle path from Aviemore to Glenmore is actually on the road, although some of it runs beside it. It's not too bad to walk and the parts that take you away from the road are quite pleasant. Apart from the cyclists. The path crosses the road at one point, just after the clay pigeon shoot I think or a little further on. The campsite at Rothiemurchus/Coylumbridge has my favourite toilet and shower block, but the ground is quite hard and full of tree roots and sap. And ant nests. Loch Morlich is quite a nice site with relatively new toilet and shower blocks. Not forgetting the Squirrel Cafe at Glenmore.
It's not a bad way to go compared to some others, Edzell to North Water Bridge, for example.
Enjoy your planning.

Re: kinbreak to loch lochy

No need to road walk between Newtonmore and Aviemore. The cycle path to Kingussie is alongside but separate from the road; then you can pick up the Badenoch Way from the RSPB car park just beyond Ruthven barracks. The current finish to the Way is at the Dalraddy campsite, but work is underway to extend it through the Kinrara estate all the way to Aviemore. If you don't want to stop in Aviemore, then you can leave the Badenoch Way at the Boathouse, Loch Insh, and walk through Inshriach forest towards Loch an Eilan; there is a choice of paths then to bring you to the Coylumbridge campsite. The Logging Trail alongside the ski road crosses just BEFORE the Clay Pigeon centre and continues up through the Caledonian pine forest to Glenmore.

Don't know which way you're heading then, but the Allt Mhor trail can take you up to the ski carpark.

Unfortunately, the Badenoch way, the Old Logging Way and the Allt Mhor Trail
are not yet on O.S maps, though all three are waymarked on the ground.

Email me if you need more info.

Re: kinbreak to loch lochy

Oops! Before the Clay Pigeons, qiite right. Wouldn't have missed it though, barriers, path markers and big boulders are a clue ;-)

Re: kinbreak to loch lochy

Hi Frederic,

On Kinbreak to Gleann Tarsuinn. This year I plotted a route. Mind you in the end I did not do it, because the weather was simply to wet. But I can give you my considerations. First of all it seems an interesting proposition, not least because not many wander in this area. It is remote, wild and on a good day suggest good views.I have done Bealach Carn na h-Urchaire twice. Once before the new road was build, and once when the new road was build from the east but the bridge at appr NH129000 was not build yet. I learned that the North facing slope of these hills is very wet, rough like tussocks and bog. On the other hand I found the south facing slopes to be quite enjoyable with much better going on shorter grass. And I found this FB across the outflow of loch Blair. And I considered that a bail out to the Loch Arkaig road is quite possible almost anywhere.

The route I plotted : From Kinbreak follow roughly the 250 m contour to Ruighe Coire nan Easaichean, climb up to the lochan at NN049958 , staying West of loch Blair following the 450 m contour south to drop down to afore mentioned FB at NN056936, then up Meal Blair to appr 600m contour and cross over to lochan at NN109947.(this being the hardest part of the route but I think the best point to cross the really wet area around upper Alt Lon Glas Beinn). Then either over the tops or contouring on the south side to enter Gleann Tarsuinn.

But I warn you,an interesting but demanding route and I can not promise the bridge is there, and your vetter will no be pleased. But if the weather is good, .....

Take care

Rolf

P.S. I just see you come from Glendessarry. In that case if your are up to it and the weather is really good you can avoid Kinbreak and go over Sgurr Mhurlagain to a high camo at CoireLoch Blair, then to the FB.

Re: kinbreak to loch lochy

At the moment my planned stop for the first day is Lochan a Mhaim, i remember the place from when we did south CWT.
Then the day after either go up Allt Coire nan uth if it looks good or the path at Allt na Feith.
So Kinbreak was a place were we could take a brew but i didnt plan to overnight there.
Ill put a note on my map that we can camp at Coire Loch Blair its good to have alternatives where you know you can camp, when you want to shorten or lenghten the day.
