When a player is putting can his partner in a 4 ball better ball stand behind him watching his putt into the hole. The putter is receiving no guidance from the team mate and the partner has already finished the hole so is recieving no help on his line. I know you can not stand behind putts during single play etc but not sure if this allowed during team play
Hi Steve,
The short answer is NO.
Rule 14-2 b. .. a player must not allow his PARTNER to position himself on or close to an extension of the line of play ..
Penalty: Matchplay - loss of hole, Strokeplay - 2 strokes.
ALTHOUGH - there is absolutely nothing in the Rules (other than etiquette) to prevent a player standing along the line and watching an OPPONENT or FELLOW COMPETITOR putt.
In a 4 b.b.b match a player putts and gos past the hole, by 4ft, the opponents concede the putt.his partner putts the ball back to him with his putter, whichas t happens is on a similar line to his own putt which he is about to putt.is there any penalty for this, as there seems an obvious advantage in learning the line.
At the start of a 4b.b.b match player A gets on the tee .and then demands that every body who is waiting to play should move around to the back of the tee behind and two the right of his back swing, there was some resistance to this as nobody had been in front of the tee and there hsd been no movement, player then said unless every body he would refuse to play, rather reluctantly every body moved, how much is the player allowed to influence were people stand,as understandably this caused quite a bit of ill feeling even to his partner
