U.S. Open warmup event scrapped
April 21, 2005
NEW YORK (AP) -- A tuneup event for the U.S. Open was canceled after organizers were unable to move it to a larger site.
The decision ends a 23-year run for the Long Island tennis tournament once known as the Hamlet Cup. The TD Waterhouse Cup had been scheduled for Aug. 20-28.
Lleyton Hewitt won last year's event in Commack. Negotiations to shift the event to East Meadow could not be concluded in time, according to a letter posted Wednesday on the tournament's Web site.
The field was to have been expanded from 32 to 54 players.
``We're confident there will be another tournament that week,'' ATP spokesman Greg Sharko said Thursday. ``We're taking applications now.''
