Message:   I used standard Auto Lacquer, In an aerosol can...I don't remember the brand, but it was pretty standard off-the-shelf car lacquer.

I laid the 'guard out in the sun on a piece of cardboard (so as not to get overspray on the garden table!) and carefully built it up, thin coat by thin coat, until, after 8 coats, it was done. I let every coat dry thoroughly between sprayings, but even after that the finish was a little tacky for a week or so afterwards. It soon set rock-solid though, and has withstood some good pick abuse since!
