On your first question the word 'hypothetically' is important here. There is no prospect of being invaded in the next 30 years. This is in a statement given out by the MOD itself. This is partly due to the peace initiative carried out post WWII called 'Moral Rearmament' which caused the European Coal and Steel Union to be formed which later developed into the EU. Also the Council of Europe came out of this inititive. Now it is unthinkable that any European country would go to war with another.
Which brings me to the next point I have to make. There are other ways of ensuring security rather than the dubiously successful and destructive one of using violence. Our government should concentrate on this aspect more and more and I would be delighted if my 'defence pounds' went on this.
Your second point about abortion is an interesting one, since that too involves deliberate killing of another human being. If you feel strongly that you are morally compromised by paying the proportion which goes to NHS abortions, I hope you will take a stand and withhold your taxes. |
