Message:   Hi there,

I'm broadly in support of the principles of the group, but do have a question.

Assuming that you have some kind of success, that legislation is passed and a percentage of British citizens choose to withold their tax from "defence" spending, what is to stop the powers that be just allocating more of the rest of the budget to "defence" to make up the defecit? The same people would be paying the same money and it would end up going to the same places. The only differences would be that the system would be more complex and clunkier, and possibly a slight easing of the consciences of those who "opted out" but didn't realise nothing had really changed.

I guess it's a similar point to that of the other Tim ("I support our armed forces, and will offset some of my tax against yours..."), except I think (possibly slightly cynically) that the decision might be made for everyone else.

Then the peace tax would only achieve anything when an overwhelming majority chose to take advantage of the option, and the remaining 14 people (or so) were paying for the armed forces on their own.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,

Tim
