This is the most ridiculous argument I have seen in years.
Your arguments simply do not stand up. How can you opt in and opt out of certain elements of tax? By all means, make a protest against war if that's how you feel. (I do not.) That's what I (as a serving member of the Forces) and many others are willing to lay down our lives to defend. (I have to paraphrase: "I do not agree with your ideas, but I will fight to defend your right to have them.") But, if everyone was to take this approach, who would pay for the peace-keeping operations in which Britain participates around the world? You may not like the thought of NATO, but it is a POLITICAL alliance and was arguably responsible for maintaining relative peace in Europe for over 50 years. What about our commitments to the UN? You cna argue that you don't need Armed Forces to be in the UN, butm, again, in the REAL world, force is occassionally needed, regrettably. What about Foreign Policy? It goes hand in hand with Defence Policy and, without a budget, there can be no Defence Policy. And, with no money and therefore no Armed Forces, who will clear up the Foot and Mouth mess, next time? Who will provide flood relief in Kent next time? Who will help support the Police and defend Great Britain and Northern Ireland against another IRA/UDA? Who will provide emergency service support if terrorists detonate a weapon of mass effect? Etc...
Your argument does not stand up and sets a very dodgy precedent. I have no kids, so can I be exempt from paying for education? Why should I pay for other people's health support? Let's dismantle the NHS. If you say that is an argument over choice rather than conscience, here's one for conscience: if I disagree with the banning of fox-hunting, as a matter of conscience (and many do), can I have a rebate for all the taxpayers's money wasted by the Govt forcing that bill through and that which the Police will have to pay to police the bill? I disagree, as a matter of conscience with the combusion engine; it is suffocating the world - I walk everywhere and I'd like a rebate on the Community Charge element which my local council spends on local roads.
To those of us who do care and are willing to risk our lives for our country and our way of life, this just looks like self-indulgence. You have the luxury of banging on about making a choice; many who I aim to help do not. It just looks like your wish is for someone else to defend you, because, whether you like it or not, ONE day, you may need defending. When Sheffield declared itslef a nuclear-free zone, someone said: "You can try to put up an umbrella, but you cannot stop the rain". What you what to do is to dismantle that umbrella and if it is (God forbid) needed, we'll have no umbrella-makers around. But at least you won't have paid your taxes.
Pay up, or go to prison, just like the rest of us... |
