Hey Nick --
It was a welcome surprise to see another chapter of "Thicker Than Water" in the latest round of updates, especially because I'm one of the people who has been whining for one! Dennis is one of your best characters, and considering how strong they are across the board, that's saying something. I'm so impressed how you portray him in two different lights, between TWW and "Pocketful of Stars." In TWW you show his inner life: his lonelienss, fear and vulnerability, the toll that abuse and rejection take on him, his longing for a safe place. The reader can't help but sympathize with him. In "Pocketful," though, we see the outward consequences of all that -- how callow and calculating he is with Joe, ultimately alienating someone who has true feelings for him. Then you bring it full circle in TWW, when he wants to atone to Joe for what he did. Great stuff. On behalf of your fandom out here in the ether, thanks! |
