Rhodesia Regiment - The History

Alex Binda, author of The Saints - history of the Rhodesian Light Infantry and Masodja - history of the Rhodesian African Rifles is now working on the history of the Rhodesia Regiment.

Please support the compilation the history of Rhodesia's largest and longest serving military unit.  We need all material pertaining to the Rhodesia Regiment and Royal Rhodesia Regiment - photos, copies of documents, anecdotes, records etc.

Use this board to record your memories. All entries will be passed to Alex and material that he chooses to use will all be properly recorded and acknowledged.

Get it down folks because none of us are getting any younger. Do you want our friend on the left here who we have called 'Comrade Honest Ncube', (drawn specifically for this project by noted cartoonist Vic MacKenzie) to give the world his version of events?

This is going to be like eating an elephant - a daunting task when faced alone but together we can do it by taking one bite at a time.

Re: History of 4 Indep

I was with 4 Indep from about April/May 1976 to 07/07/1977. I was sent in from Intake 150. Originally worked with Sgt. Bez Bezuidenthout (ex RLI) and then C/Sgt van Vuuren (ex SAS). The primary Unit at the time was intake 146 and this was followed by Intake 152. Those poor chaps (Intake 146)were the first guys to get their intake increased by six months just six days prior to standing down - increased from 1 year to 18 months (there were some very unhappy soldiers). The camp Medic at the time was Sgt. Mike Kemish (ex-SAS)I would have to really scratch the memory to get a list of names. I spent a great deal of my time based at Vic Falls. Somewhere I think I have a T-Shirt from the time depicting the camp dog (which really belonged to C/Sgt van Vuuren) - I think C/Sgt van Vuuren also left 4 Indep on about the 7th July 1977.

Re: History of 4 Indep

I was in intake 140 which was posted to 4 Indep Co after passing out from School of Infantry on 6th December 1974. We did 12 months national service which ended in about June that year. I was only there for a couple of months before going to what later became Greys Scouts in about February / March 1975. The three platoon comanders were H.G.(Gaffs) Gifford (Midlands farmer), "DB" Warren (farmer?)and Steve "Boffin" Bowen.(teacher)
Guys in my stick/section were Peter (PiPi) Ward, Mutty Mellows, and Zack (?) MAG gunner. We managed to survive rolling Mutty's Ford Anglia on the way back from the Falls late one night, after a few too many beers. Haven't seen any of these guys since! Also Rick Sanderson-Smith who was KIA in 1979.I have some photos of us on patrol in the Falls/Binga/Wankie areas if you are interested.
Peter Le Roux was a corporal who left in early 1975 to become a chopper pilot.
Maj Bill Winnell (RAR) was a 4 Indep Co, CO later on. He lives here in Perth but I haven't had contact with him for a number of years. He may have something to contribute if I can make contact with him again.
Gaffs Gifford became a highly respected and popular Company Commander in 2nd Batt RR(Was 2 Batt based in Gwelo?)later on.

Can't recall much else from over 30 years ago, hope this helps.

cheers

Keith Allan.
