question for ex-smokers
i have quit smoking before and never experienced depression from it. I quit a little ove a week ago and about midweek began getting depressed for no known reason. By this weekend, i was feeling extremely depressed and starting yesterday like i am going to burst out in tears and still have no idea why. Only thing that has changed recently is quitting smoking although i am not nicotene free as i am still chewing nicotene gum. i am not really one to cry but can gget blue, but this is much more. one other oddity - quit smoking he last time for almost two years...picked it up again in ja. i have also been longing for ja. very odd. have any of you who have quit smoking or perhaps some other addiciton experienced this kind of severe depression from giving up smoking or anohter addicition? |

Ray I can't say for certain but possibly you are detoxing from some/many of the chemicals in cigarettes. Not surprising if you are thinking about JA, since that's when/where you started smoking again. Celebrate each day you get through. I managed to see a movie without buying popcorn which was a big deal to me! It was a challenge for me only up to the point the movie started, then I forgot all about it and walking out I was so happy that I didn't have any. I think we long for our good memories of the addictions, and it is so easy to forget how (bad we may) feel after indulging. At least, that's what its like for me. Remember also that you have experienced many things over the past year... the more you tune into the excitement of where you are going the less energy you will lose looking back at what was. I've been using with a book by Cheryl Richardson: Life Makeovers ~ 52 Practical & Inspiring Ways to Improve your Life One Week at a Time.

ray i quit smoking cigarettes 7 years ago...it wasn't even planned, i got the flu and just could not inhale....so by day 10 without cigs i just chewed alot of gum and have not had a cigarette since...now, i have started a new bad also while in ja. that is smoking beadies...it's definitely an oral fixation for me...but i still don't crave cigarettes....most of us will get a little depressed when we loose something we have done habitually for a long time...there is a void...the depression will lift and you will be happier...good luck.... |

I'm not at all surprised about your depression. I quit 27 years ago and still remember the agony I went through. It is almost like starting your adult life over again as you have always done everything around the smoking habit. Now you have to figure out how to live that life in a completely different manner. The ads running on TV now are excellent on this exact topic. I think the detox is also very important. You are getting rid of all the nasties in your system and the system is begging for them. BE STRONG. YOU CAN DO IT! Just doesn't feel like it at times. Just be careful when you go back to Ja as a few Red Stripes or shots of rum with make you feel like you can smoke a few and not become addicted again. Wrong! Doesn't take much to start it all back up again. |

Oh my goodness Ray this is exactly why I picked my ciggs back up last time I tried to quit. Just busted out crying while driving down the road and could not get a grip. Went straight to the store for a pack to get me over the hump and that was the end of the quitting for me. Hang in there you can do it Ray. If you have made it a week then you can do it. I'm sending good wishes for your success my friend. |

Ray, I FEEL YOUR PAIN! I started taking Chantix last week, & man is it funking with my head. I've smoked 'all natural chemical free' American Spirits for the last 10 years, so it's moreso the pills & mental withdrawal & the 'oral fixation thing', rather the side effects than the chem withdrawal(at least that's my take on it). Keep strong & lean on your support network, I'd rather go thru a little bit of hell if it means I can successfully put the cigs down. Regarding the DT's/Withdrawal & the depression, they go hand in hand...my worst experience was coming off xanax(thanks doc for that scrip!), which resulted in SEVERE depression, insomnia, & the loss of 25 lbs. in 1 month(too bad I didn't lose the weight in a healthy way, eh?). I wish you the best, & I hope you start feeling better soon. BBS Montie |

Montie I know someone that has been taking xanax for way too many years. Think she may take 4 a day at least and they don't seem to do a thing for her anymore as she still very high strung and irritable. Honestly I don't know why they are prescribed but whatever it is they don't help her. Of course this is not the only thing her doctor has her on. I don't see how she even functions but she does. Works everyday and works hard. You would never know she takes anything. I can't even imagine what would happen if she tried to stop and I sure can't imagine me having to deal with her getting over the hump. No doubt in my mind she would be worse than running up on a monster. I so wish she could stop taking all that mess. I have always been very adamant with my doctor about not giving me anything addictive. I have been given one thing for nerves but a 90 day supply will last me over a year as I am just not one to take a pill and I'm not one that wants to be calm all the time. lolol |

What's the deal with the American Spirit cigs? I had a friend tell me its a better way to quit smoking, but I thought it was all bad for you? |

IT IS ALL BAD! A typical 'name brand' cigarette(marlboro, kool, winston, etc.) has over 200 additives &/or chemicals, as well as the tobacco. American Spirits are 'all natural leaf only, no additives'. BBS Montie |

wow - have not had a chance to stop back in. thanks for the words of suppport guys! Montie - good luck and be careful with those drugs to stop smoking. I have been hearing of TERRIBLE side effects including depression and even suicide. Not sure about your particular drug. Best of luck to you too. Tammy - funny thing that you had the same thing - and for me it was worse in the car too! Someone told me the other day that the wrost for them when quitting was driving! Interesting. Must be a trigger! I think you should try again and let the feelings flow. Another funny thing...did not realize it but i had also stopped drinking coffee because I was afraid it would be a trigger. Drank some coffe yesterday and boy did it help. So I think Lola's detox/withdrawal and others of you who agreed is absolutely dead on right. Well it is around ten days - feeling a little better. Depression seems to have subsided. Nice not to wake up coughing and easier breathing up and down steps, etc. Needing a little less sleep and waking refreshed. A word abut xanax - i do take xanax once in a while for anxiety - i get those breathing attacks. I NEVER take them more than once in a day. ONLY take them for symptoms. And NEVER take them two days in a row. I found that if you take them in succession, after the first time, you need to double the dosage for the same effect - they are THAT ADDICITIVE. Great care should be taken with them but they have been the only thing that helps when I hae anxiety attacks (although I have been free of them for over a year now and had to throw a bunch of old xanax away). Let's keep this thread going for support of those who are stopping or interested in stopping smoking or other things. Perhaps each of us writing a blurb about what we are experienceing can help the next person. It is nice to know that it is the stopping causing symptoms and you are not cracking up - lol. And, if you are having a tough moment, perhaps just writing about it will help. thanks again guys! |

I am a cheater! As you all know I started Chantix in Feb and quit smoking.it was tough for about a week then real easy ...with chantix I didn't even think about it... but here comes the problem..I drink and bartend in Wisconsion..which is not smoke free yet. So there I sit with everyone around me smoking.. I cave! I won't waste cheating with a regular cig, only a methol and there aren't many smoking menthol.. I have bought about 4 pack in the last month and keep them in my freezer. I use to sit in my chair in the living room and smoke one after another. Now I make myself go outside to smoke. Also, I have had a gal pal that is moving in the first of July but for now she just crashes on my couch on weekends. She smokes regulars...and I make her smoke outside too but she coaxes me out to sit with her and then I light up too...she teases me..."you gonna waste it on a regular?" I just need to get strong or something as I am coughing and have phlem again. Boy that was nice waking up with a clear nose and chest. |

Dawn, Its hard I know from experience. I think everyone has to find the right way for them quit. The good news is we have many boardies out there that has quit successfully and fully support others no matter how many times they fall off the fence. When you friend moves in if you want to quit smoking you will have too tell her you need to sit this smoke break out when she tries coaxing you outside. I always thought it would be easier to quit if I didn't smoke in my house, but found it was just as hard. Trust me if you want a cig. you will go out in just about any weather. Being a bartender at a bar that allows smoking is even harder, but can be done. You are strong woman whether you think it or not, but you are. I have read what you have been through and I know you can kick the habit. Take it one day at a time. Find the best way to quit for you. Might not be quitting cold turkey, or might be. There are herbal cigs (I am not taking about anything illegal) you can buy that might help as well. I have friend who quit that way. One day at a time and you can do it!

Heh.... be careful of smokers trying to lure you to join them! They don't want you to be successful, they want you to stay right where they are because it is easier for them! Become the person SHE aspires to be more like, don't let yourself sink back to where she is and you were. Smokers tend to hang out with smokers, drink/drug abusers with similar abusers, exercise devotees with active people etc. I was at a funeral recently, and not at all surprised to see the teeth (or lack of) in a particular segment of the family. What really made an impression on me was their friends/dates/mates also had similar mouth conditions. It was a very clear message to me that 'like' people hang together. Did you know, your income is most likely to be the average of your friends' income? If you want more income, make friends with people who are making money. Things to think about, eh????? . |

cc - great advice. I know this: I have quit probably ten times over my lifetime and several of them for a year or more - the last time about two years. Each time gets harder and I smoke more each time I pick it up. CC is right - can be done with the job even though it will be very hard. PA just passed a smiking ban to soon come into effect thank god. Your friend moving in is technically an enabler although she prob does not know it. Need to tell her not to try and tempt you. Easier said than done. One point CC made - you been through a very hard time and got through it and I know you can get through this too. Cheering you on from here. Go get em girl! |

I've been able to cut my intake in half after a week of the pills, without too many side effects(weird dreams, continued wanton to rip somebody's head off for making stupid mistakes!). Good for you for getting right back at it, you cannot punish yourself for a misstep here & there! Thanks for posting, airing it out always seems to help. Walk Good!
