golden krust caribbean bakery and grill - ja fast food chain
cool thing today!... train only runs every hour... was reading a case file and looked up at the time to realized i missed the train in my deep thought...ughhh. i was at the Gallery mall in downtown philly - where i catch the train. So i started walking around and came acorss thie above fast food place. Very cool! Patties - beef, chicken, jerk chicken, shrimp and soy. Jerk chicken, escoveitch fish, brasied ox tail, curried chicken, Ting and ginger beer. Pigeon pea soup, red pea soup, beef and chicken soup. Festical. Rum cake, carrot cake, rock cake, and more. Rice and peas, fried plantains, dumplings, white rice and steamed vegetables. Oh my - what to have? So i got me a platter of curried chicekn with some rice and peas, fried plantains, and steamed veges - cabbage, carrot, peas and corn - yummy. Wahsed down with a ting. My server was from Saint Catherine and was not interested in hearing about my trips to the island, or any other discusssion of JA - very reminiscent of some of the service I receive when I hit the rock and made it feel "for real mon". website - goldenkrustybakery.com locations in manhatten, brooklyn, bronx, queens, long island, westchester, rocjland and duchess in new york and also in new jersey, connecticut, pennsylvania, norht carolina, florida, california and maryland. oh - and georgia. Food was good - tasted authentic and was a real treat - check it out if you can! |

I have been eating at Golden Krust for years - love them. They are a family run company who has really expanded and done well - And they ship patties. Their patties and coco bread are also available for shipping through sams247.com |

Wish the shipping wasn't so expensive. If these places only knew how much money they could make by just absorbing some of the shipping charges. Suz if you hear of anymore free shipping or reduced shipping like before please post it here. I would love to take advantage of that again and order up a few things. No I still have not found any Ting.

I ordered patties online from them and they were good. Not as good as being in Jamaica, but good. I would recommend ordering from them. Ray, Next time your in there tell them they need to open up a shop in Memphis, TN. Or at least starting selling their products at grocery stores. I have read about JA patties being sold in places like Sams club, Kroger, etc, but never seen them here. |

CC - I have seen them in the grocery stores - they are usually in the freezer section, or sometimes in the area where the hams / kielbasa / hot dog are. They aren't that good, though

Suz heading down to Florida soon so hopefully I can get me a couple cases of Ting and please oh please let me find some Canned Ackee at an affordable price. I got one can and I'm scared to cook it as I know afterwards I'll just want more.

Tammy, Can you or anyone else give me a good Ackee recipe. I have a can and need assistance with cooking it. Love to eat it in JA, but never think about cooking it myself. PS: my coca bread attempt failed miserably. Well...maybe not miserably, but it didn't have a that JA taste about it. I was sad, but still happy that at least when I am home I can beg my sister in law (lives in DC) to bring some when she comes home to visit.

CC I always simmer my saltfish about 2 or 3 times as I can't take all that salt. Then break it up or sometimes I fry it dry after the boiling and then break it up. Gives a little different taste. I use just a tad of oil and chop up my scallion, onion, tomato and cook that on low for a few minutes with Jamaican black pepper. Then add Ackee and saltfish and cover, simmer on low for about 15 minutes. Since it is canned Ackee you don't want to cook too long as it will be too mushy and I like my Ackee a little firm. It's easy to fix and of course now I want to cook my last can but I sure hate not having some in my cabinet.
