name that horse
I am happy to report that my "ugly duckling" black filly is finally growing into her Swan stage. She just turned 4 years old, her body is filling out, the pieces of the puzzle are beginning to fit together in the right way, and she is becoming a rather breathtakingly beautiful mare. She is a half-Sulphur, by Santiago out of a Kiger/Appendix QH dam. She has been previously known by various names including Dulcinea (the sweet one), Aldonza (her less sweet alter ego), Hammerhead, and Wild Thing. Today, I was admiring her slick black coat, without a single white hair anywhere, shimmering in the evening twilight, and found myself thinking "now, THIS is a horse that could star as Black Beauty." Except that Beauty was such a domesticated, urbane equine, while Dulce has that Wild Thang quality. I am SO happy she is finally looking well balanced. Her gangly teenage stage (age 1 thru 3) was sometimes painful to behold. Her jaw is still very prominant, perhaps too powerful for a female, but she has grown a powerful, high-crested neck to match it. The overall effect is decidedly impressive. Her long gangly thoroughbred legs no longer look like they belong on a different horse. She is built for power and speed. I am itching to ride her. Taking it slow, though. Have been ponying her saddled, messing with her every day. She is coming along quite nicely. What a mover. My Zorro horse! I really do need to find a permanent name that suits her. I've been holding onto the name "Dulcinea" in the hopes she would regain the sweet nature she exhibited when I first got her, at age 5 months. But she's really too outgoing and dominant for a sweet name. Now that she's of a ridable age and I will be introducing her to people under saddle, I should find the right name and stick to it. Hurricane? Thunder? Tornado? Hmmmm... |
