SIGNS OF FOALING Signs that a mare is about to foal can vary from mare to mare, and not to mares are a like, but here are some general signs that a mare is about to foal: 2 - 6 weeks prior to foaling the udder will start to swell - (JUST A LITTLE PUFFY) Teats fill 4 to 6 days before foaling Relaxation of the croup muscles, tail head, buttocks and lips of vulva, 7 - 19 days prior to foaling. Waxing, 2 - 4 days prior to foaling. Waxing refers to the colostrum (first milk) that drips and dries at the end of the teats. Waxing only occurs in approx. half of mares. The mare may become anxious and restless. She may exhibit signs of colic such as biting or kicking her belly. She may also lay down and get up again repeatedly, raise her tail and urinate frequently, and sweat. This behavior should not last more than an hour or two without progress toward foaling. Often, if it is a mares first time foaling, her udder will fill, shrink back to normal and then fill again repeatedly. Sometimes a mares udder will not fill until after the foal is born. CLO ISN'T SHOWING ANY OF THESE SIGNS. SHE JUST STANDS THERE AND WONDERS WHY EVERYONE IS COMING TO LOOK AT HER?

Don't worry too much, some mares never show any of those signs at all. Its normal for the mare to be calm, I have never had a mare get anxious or upset at all. The only way I have been able to really tell when my mares were going to foal was when the milk that drips out will start to drip out clear and then go milky right before the mare foals. Not all of my mares have dripped milk but most of them will. What days did she get bred? |

I have photo documentation on April 8, 2007. If we go on that date CLO is past due a week, but she is only having small puffing boobies and a BIG belly. We did not see Prince and CLO hugging or kissing in May, 2007, so sometime between April 8 and May 8, they did the deed.

So in reality you have until April 15th before you need to start to worry. If her bags have not filled yet she still has about 2 weeks to go. If they are just starting to swell you have about a week and a half. If she is full of milk then you are down to a week and when she is dripping milk she will foal. I have it down pretty good. I can usually tell up to a day or two when my mares will foal. One mare I picked it to the day, I figured she would have her baby the next day and she had it that night, well in the early morning hours of the next day. After you have done this a few times you will be able to know better. They usually go in the night but I have had 2 babies born in the middle of the afternoon. Good luck

I am due to have a 1/2 Kiger and Sulphur about the 20th of April. The Kiger is a baby from my 2003 Kiger - concieved in the wild and the stallion is the Black Sulphur from the internet adoption. I am also breeding my black sulphur to a grulla sulphur for a 2009 baby. |

We're only expecting one of our own here at the ranch this year (Wildfire is due in May). I deliberately did not breed Ramira last year. She does best as an every-other-year mama. Santiago's been a busy boy, but on other people's mares. |

We will have 1 full Sulphur baby this year (1 Sulphur X Spanish Mustang cross and 2 full sm's) hopefully out of Willow and Dragon... should be a spectacular mover! Then we will see how this foal matures and may give Willow the year off before we breed again! I would like to get more training on her anyway! WE did take Wisp, Breeze and Cole out to their own pasture yesterday and they were really happy to get out of the mud! Breeze was first at the gate saying get me the heck outta here, Cole was next and was just as eager and finally Wisp... I wasn't sure how it was gonna go cause she was fired up being alone but I just walked halfway to meet her, she came up, I scratched her on the shoulder and she lowered her head as I put the halter on and we walked calmly out to her new pasture! Funny cause she was herding Breeze and Cole away from the fence and away from Dragon, who thought she must be another stallion as she wasn't instantly in love with him! ha! They will figure it out soon enough! WE did get enough hair to build our own horse from them so pictures will be coming in a couple of weeks! Duane |
