FTMs and pregnansy
I have a curious question. If an ftm gets pregnant, is there is there any way for him to know. And can he experience morning sickness.

Re: FTMs and pregnansy
If a regular pregnancy test would not work (presumably because of the male hormones), then I would think one would need to see a doctor to ascertain whether he were pregnant. If an FTM were pregnant, it seems that any regular symptoms of pregnancy could be experienced. When first starting T, many of us still have periods for a while. As long as you have a period, it should be possible to get pregnant from intercourse with a bio-male. Pat Califia's partner, Matt Rice, went off T for a few years in order to have their baby. So, it is definitely possible!

Re: FTMs and pregnansy
How long does it usually take one of us to stop having a period after hormone therapy?
I never had much of one to begin with ,and after one shot I never had another one.

Re: FTMs and pregnansy
From what my doc. and others have told me it usually takes about a year for it to stop but I think that is just the standard and everyone is different.

Re: FTMs and pregnansy
It took me about three months to stop having a period once I started T. I found this good page on a transman's site (I sincerely hope it is ok to copy and paste this here): If an FTM chooses not to have a hysto/oopho procedure, he should continue to have yearly Pap smears (to screen for cervical cancer) and should seek out the care of a doctor if he experiences any irregular vaginal bleeding (including spotting), cramping, or pain. It is not uncommon for pre-hysterectomy FTMs to experience a buildup of endometrial tissue, especially during the first few years of testosterone therapy. Endometrial tissue is normally shed during menstruation, but since this process is usually stopped a few months into testosterone therapy, additional tissue may continue to build up and may eventually begin to shed in the form of spotting. Because irregular bleeding can be a sign of cancer (though this is often not the case), FTMs who experience any bleeding/spotting should see a doctor who will perform tests to determine the cause of the spotting. These tests may include an endometrial biopsy and/or an ultrasound. The doctor may advise a short course of progesterone to cause the uterus to shed the excess endometrial tissue-- this is much like inducing a period. While this may be unpleasant, it should be understood as a preventative measure, since the unusual buildup of endometrial tissue has been linked to endometrial cancer.
Here is the URL, as I think his page is chock full of information, just like Nick's: http://www.ftmguide.org/

Re: FTMs and pregnansy
It's really possible to go off T to have a baby????? What's involved cause that's one thing that really bums me out about being trans is that I can't have my own children. And what are the complications? My boyfriend and I want at least one kid of our own, but we're too young and I've been on T for two years. And does anyone know about the California law about an ftm and and boi guy getting married. I think it's leagal, but I'm not sure.

Re: FTMs and pregnansy
Hey Kyle -
Here's a link I found about transpeople and marriage on the HRC website: http://www.hrc.org/Template.cfm?Section=Home&CONTENTID=14702&TEMPLATE=/ContentManagement/ContentDisplay.cfm
I didn't check it out, but I do know that there are marriages out there with trans people as one partner that are same sex marriages because the state laws force marriage in assigned gender, not chosen. So, if you are a transman, and your partner is bio-male, I believe you would not have a problem marrying, but it's worth more research.
As to pregnancy, it is absolutely possible. As long as you have not had a hysterectomy, an oophorectomy or gone through menopause, menstruation and reproductive viability should return if testosterone is ceased. Unfortunately, I don't know what the concerns, or health risks, are with starting and stopping T. But here is a Village Voice article about Matt and Patrick and their son: http://www.villagevoice.com/news/0025,califia-rice,15833,1.html

Re: FTMs and pregnansy
I was reading Helen Boyd's blog over at http://www.myhusbandbetty.com/ and stumbled upon this passage from a speech she gave:
If he had born in Texas, he could have married a man legally, however, because the state of Texas doesn’t recognize any gender change. Sadly, Christie Lee Littleton only found that out when she tried to get some justice for her deceased husband, who she felt had died as a result of medical malpractice. What she found instead was that the state of Texas did not consider her a woman, and her marriage was invalid, and that she had no right to pursue justice for her loved one at all. Trans women and their female partners can get legally married in Texas, as can trans men and their male partners. I’m not kidding.
So, my guess would be that CA would absolutely do marriage in chosen gender, if TX is being held up as a red state example of a place that DOESN'T recognize the chosen gender for marriage.
Helen Boyd wrote My Husband Betty and She's Not the Man I Married, great books about her and her transwoman husband. I have only been able to be seen as male 100% of the time for the last three years, so I hadn't thought too much about the MTF community and their issues, much less straight male crossdressers and their wives. So, these books really are great to get that perspective a little bit.

Re: FTMs and pregnansy
Oh, there is so much mis information here. My god! Yes, transguys can still get pregnant. Often even after stopping their perieds. Eventually sterility usually ensues, but who knows when. Don't count on it as a form of birth control. Some women continue periods/ and/or stop periods irregardless of pregnancy. If there is a chance of pregnancy, find a dr. who you can work with. If you might want to carry to term, you need to get off T immediately as it has been linked to birth defects.
Of course don't go off T without medical advice.
