I own a 1983 v45 magna (vf750c) that has been sitting for a while. I fired it up last year for the first time in a few. Before I put it away, I filled the tank and added stabilizer. But after a few years of ignoring the bike, the tank was full of what looked like yellow water. I drained and flushed and was able to light off. I took it for a 40 mile ride, but it just didn’t run right. It wasn’t smooth and seemed to cut out or miss at about 6000 rpm. Also, when coming to a stop, the rpm would hang momentarily at about 3000 then slowly drop down to a struggling idle. My gut feeling is that either one or more carbs are in need a cleaning.
I bought the bike new in 1983 and have been pretty good regarding maintenance. I performed all tasks myself with the exception of a valve adjustment and a carb sync at approx 8000 miles (a friend who was an experienced mechanic helped). I now have about 30000 miles on the odometer.
My questions are as follows:
1) Is there a way to isolate the faulty carb or carbs without full removal?
2) If removal and disassembly is required for cleaning, can you suggest any
tips, methods or materials?
3) Should I plan on purchasing a set of carb sticks and whatever special tools that will be needed? What are they?
I feel confident to undertake this task although I’m a little apprehensive until I can get more info. Your advice would be greatly appreciated |
