Changing attitudes.

How do we change negative attitudes towards people who are different in any way? How do we ensure people with disabilities are accepted for what we are and are not defined by what we cannot do?

Re: Changing attitudes.

It's Phil here, Hi Felix

We can make people change by ensuring that we ask them to THINK before they give ad-hoc replies. Before my stroke I was guily of this, I've since seen the error of my thoughtlessness

Re: Changing attitudes.

I agree about people making assumptions - we all do it! But how to change this? Can it be done by achievement and inclusion into society or by teaching people to value others for what they are rather than judge them by some preconceived stereotype.

Perhaps it's both. But how to do it?

Over the years attitudes and assumptions have changed a great deal so perhaps there is hope!

Changing attitudes.

Hi Felix
I think some things have changed, but there is still ignorance and fear and the attitude 'it won't happen to me or mine'.

The more people with personal experience of disability speak out and enlighten others the better. Most people just do'nt understand and would give up at the first hurdle if they really understood what managing an impairment on a daily basis really means and that we all aspire to similar things in life.

Like the women's movement or any minority group you have start with an aggressive position, but in the 21st century education and evolution will move things forward quicker...keep on talking......

Re: Changing attitudes.

Hi Felix

What do people think of the current Leonard Cheshire attempt to change attitudes through their TV adverts?

Is using non human cartoon characters dodging the issue or making people watch and think again? Will it spill over into real life acceptance or will people just be kind to grasshoppers they step on!?
