Hi, I've been reading these postings and although I haven't read any of Kris Silver's comics (and hadn't heard of SILVERWOLF before reading the e-conversation), it does interest me that he's clearly provoking a real discussion. So however bad he may be he must have SOMETHING.
I would say there's a parallel here with bad television and cinema products. I'm trying to get into the film and TV business in the UK as well as being a comics writer and assistant editor for CHIMERA ARTS (www.freewebs.com/chimeraarts). Like yourselves I'm appalled at how much poor quality there is in both media. But it is the people who have the willpower to get them made; as TV/film producers or publishers, and then into distribution which is often harder, who define what we eventually get in these marketplaces. Kris Silver plainly believes his stuff should be read (even if it is bad) and acts on that and is probably making a big effort to do it all with whatever partners work with him. The same is true of someone like Lloyd Kaufmann of TROMA films. I have never seen such crappy documentaries and films as his company makes but he does the work, makes money and keeps himself going! So I think it's worth bearing in mind that if we want to see something good it's often incumbent on ourselves to make it. Otherwise, the mediocre and bad stuff will rule. Hope it's a useful contribution and best regards! |
