I DO enjoy comics...even bad ones. I own or have owned nearly every single comic Kris ever wrote and I have enjoyed the Hell out of them.
The difference between us is that I do not feel that you have to inflate someone's talent or stretch the truth about their potential in order to enjoy the work for what it is.
I keep going back to the Ed Wood comparison because it is valid. There are TONS of people who are huge fans of Ed Wood in the sense that we will watch his films, over and over and can talk about them for hours.
But NONE of us try and claim that Ed Wood was anything BUT a bad film maker who did not realize how bad he was. Orgy of the Dead is a terrible atrocity of a movie with absolutely NO potential at all(aside from satirical homage) and no one would seriously claim otherwise.
Orgy of the Dead is better written than most of Kris' stuff. Same goes for 'Plan 9 from Outer Space'.
It is not a simple matter of one uninformed opinioon vs. another as you have tried to characterize it. I have substantiated my argumetns all along and could go on for days pointing things out like How Grips is said(by Kris) to have gotten his name from the handles of his Nubaku, yet he is already called "Grips" as early as page #2 of Grips #1 adn he does not recieve his Nubaku until near the end of that book(through the same superhero supply mail order that Edge uses no doubt *rolleyes*) and a thousand and one other blunders.
You have responded with a sort of 'You say to-MAY-to. I say to-MAH-to' kind of retort without even an attempt at backing up your position.
Also, you keep firing at these strawmen you are building(i.e. that I am some crotchety, bitter person who does not enjoy comics).
So by all accounts, I have made my case that Kris is probably the worst writer to ever work in comics and his characters have no real potential(again, aside from someone parodying Kris' work. His characters have a LOT of potential for comedy.). You are certainly not obligated to refute or answer this and I never said you were. But don't come here and cry and jab your pointy finger in my face and then not bother to qualify your assertions.
I am still open to ANYONE, J.A.G or otherwise, showing me the alleged "potential" of Silver's characters but don't tell me they have all this potential then refuse to provide any substantiation for this claim.--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Replying to: The thing is, I don't have to justify my enjoyment of Kris' characters to you or anyone else. You have a right to your opinion. Sad though to see that you don't keep an open mind to the potential out there and the possibilities that exist. In any case, you have a right to your views and I have a right to me.
Oh. As for me being Kris' staunchest defender; far from it. I have a lot of things to criticize him about with regards to his writing and suchlike but the bottom line is comics are supposed to be fun. Sit back and enjoy and take them for what they are. Ya don't like Kris Silver's work or see the potential of his characters then don't read them. Life's to short to sit back and criticize everything. As I said, comics are meant to be fun. Enjoy. jag |
