The "bad characters" thing is YOUR strawman. I argued that Kris is a bad WRITER and his characters reflect that. I also pointed out, and stand by this, that his characters had no real potential.
It is true that one can take even the most undeveloped(or POORLY developed), uninteresting, cliche' character invented by any child with a box of Crayolas and turn it into a decent character, or take a decent character(re: not well developed but screaming potential) and turn it into a GREAT one ala Alan Moore & Miracleman/Marvelman.
However, if you are half the writer you seem to think you are, I can only ask WHY you would want to bother taking Kris' collection of 'Death-this' 'Night-that' names, accompanied by often eye-searing visual conceptions(Vigil's stuff being an obvious exception) when you could simply create GOOD characters, with better namjes and real personalities yourself?!
Which character of Kris' has this "potential" you speak of? I am asking in all seriousness because I have an almost encyclopedic knowledge of everything Silver has done and I know of NO characters who are not carbon copys of all the others in the SW universe, save having slightly different names and powers/weapons. Death-lord is just Death Hawk with sais and less dialogue. Death Hawk is just Grips with wings... etc.
Even in the rare instance of a character showing some individuality, such as Grips' psycho blood-fetish, kris did not realize it and ended up dropping the ball by making ALL of his chartacters somewhat psycho-violent. Even if he hadn't dropped the ball there though Grips would not have been 'interesting'(just would have shown that Kris was learning something about characterization).
As someone who knows a bit about creative writing myself(no, I am not a professional writer nor have I wanted to be in the last 15 years), I know full well that I could mentally ********** for all of 10 minutes and come up with a whole team full of better, more interesting characters than all of the Legion X-1 gallery. They would have distinct personalities(quirks, histories, et al), far better names, and given another hours or two they would each have more appealing visual conceptions.
To sum up, yeah...hypothetically I could do things like wonder about what the "X" stands for in "Legion X" then come up with a story around that("eXpendable"?). Then I could delve into each member's personality and past and make each of them their own character and such. In the end people would say "It is nothing special but compared to Kris' original work, it is like reading The Watchmen!" but why bother?? Why not just create something good on my own without the baggage of Silver's Ed Wood-esque universe(calling a make believe version of Sacremento a "universe" seems fallacious doesn't it?)??
I say the same to YOU. Instead of sitting aropund wishing for Kris to start publishing bad comics again, in the hopes that he would hire YOU(do I even need to remind of his track record for bringing in competent writers to help him out...?) to revamp all of his characters, just write some plot oputlines adn a script or two yourself then shovel them at a few artists adn see if anyone bites. In this day and age you could publish on the web as a worst case scenario. |
