What "potential" do Kris' characters possess?
All of Kris' characters(and I use the term VERY loosely) are the exact same. Besides the visual/cosmetic differences(including differnt powers and such) name a SINGLE difference of any import between any one SW character and any other SW character.
All you can come up with are superficial differences like gender. Every single character is just a projection of the way Kris imagines himself if he existed in his fantasy Sacremento.
No offense to Mr. Silver. I have no real idea what kind of person he is or how he treats others, beyond his behavior and expressed opinions in his old editorials. Maybe is is a super nice guy for all I know.
But he ius EASILY the worst writer ever to work in ANY medium from comics to adult erotica. Anyone who has had the most elementary education in creative or professional writing, be it screenwriting or what have you can't help but recognise that Kris most certainly has NOT had such training. He has never demonstrated the slighest understanding of characterization, plotting, pacing, transition, foreshadowing or anything itself having to do with successful writing.
Every single one of his characters behaves in precisely the same manner. Their dialogue during fights with villains goes something like :
Hero: "Drop this **********er. You will jsut die."
Villain: "HA! You don't even know when you're(usually incorrectly spelled "your") dead! Come eat some of this hero-boy!"
Hero: [ Narrative ] He's going to die here today.
"Like I said..."
[ Villain charges blindly at hero swinging some bladed weapon or firing guns ]
Hero: "your(SIC) Dead!"
It is just terrible.
And as if the terrible dialogue were not bad enough, there is bad plotting...ridiculously bad! And he does not simply use the bad plot idea ONCE! No that would not be bad enough! He RE-USES the same bad plots over, adn over again! Not only do we see entire medievel civilazations beneath the sewers(just feet below the surface which the civil engineers of CA are somehow oblivious to) in Grips Adventures. A whole DIFFERENT culture exists beneath Sacremento in Guilotine!
You'd think the sounds of jackhammers and mass transit would have alerted the knights and peasants below Sacremento to the fact that the industrial revolution occured!?
Teh ONLY time that any SW characters are not spouting off the typical "I'm tha baddest bad-ass there is!" dialogue is when they(ANY of them) are featured in a fight with/team up with Grips. Then tehy go on for a few pages about what a bad ass GRIPS is and how pathetic THEY are in comparison.
This is the kind of writing that teenagers creating their own comics will come up with adn laugh about later when they are in college or out of college.
And if bad dialogue and bad plotting adn poor characterization in general are not enough to convicne you that Kris Silver cannot write himself out of Kris SIlver script, there is the grammar and general ignorance.
In the second issue of the original Grips he refers to a child rapist as if he were a homosexual and the two terms were interchangeable. This would be fine if it were just the character of Grips and it were the express intent of a decent writer to characterize Grips as an ignoramous with little education. Then it would make perfect sense to speak this way and have no idea that the overwhelming majority of child rapists are heterosexual. But that is never the way Kris characterized ANY of his characters. They are all the craftiest of the crafty, the baddest of the bad, the most insticntive and knowledgeable etc.
But since they are all just projections of Kris' ideal and the way he wants to see himself, they all display the same lack of education , misconcetptions, 'kill 'em all just for talking smack' sort of nonsense.
And finally, there is the lack of continuity. If you are going to create a 'universe' where all teh characters exist together adn all their storylines have an affect on this shared existence, then you have to pay attention to the timeline. You cannot place the events of Grips Adventures #1-2 right after the SW Legion X-1 #2(which takes place in '96) AND tell us the events of Grips' falling through a wall into the medievel underworld take place two years AFTER Grips #4(SW)!
It does not work.
You want an example of absolutely BRILLIANT scripting? Pick up Faust. David Quinn is a masterful scribe(though I doubt the typical Grips fan would even be able to follow what is going on because David Quinn employs those aforementioned "plots" perfect characterization).--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- Replying to: Too, bad. I've always felt his characters had great potential and I certainly would have loved to have an opportunity to write some of them particularly Legion X-1 and Legion X-2. Those were my faves. Oh well, maybe Tracy Schell might revive his Future Beat series one of these days. I'd love to see that back in print too at some point.Sad to hear though Kris won't be coming back to the comics biz. It's a great loss. JAG |
